LCL Shipping from Vietnam to Los Angeles
For importers whose orders are too small to fill a container. LCL (less than container load) means your cartons share a container with other shippers’ cargo. This page explains how LCL is priced, how long it takes, and when a full container becomes the better deal.

How LCL Works
Your supplier delivers cartons to a consolidation warehouse, called a container freight station (CFS), in Vietnam. There your cargo is loaded into a container with other shippers’ freight. After the ocean voyage, the container goes to a CFS near the LA ports, where it is unpacked and your cartons are released for pickup or delivery.
Those warehouse steps at each end are why LCL usually takes longer than a full container, even on the same ship.
What Affects Your LCL Cost
LCL is priced by space, not by the whole box. These are the lines on an LCL quote:
| Cost component | Why it matters for LCL |
|---|---|
| Ocean freight | Charged per cubic meter (CBM) or by weight, whichever is greater, usually with a minimum charge. |
| Origin CFS fees | Receiving, handling and loading your cartons at the consolidation warehouse in Vietnam. |
| Destination CFS fees | Unpacking the container and handling your cartons near the LA ports. |
| Customs brokerage and ISF | LCL shipments still need a U.S. customs entry, and ISF is filed before loading. |
| Duties | Set by the HTS code of each product. |
| Delivery | Trucking from the CFS to your warehouse; liftgate or appointment fees can apply. |
- Volume. Once you fill about half a container, a full container often costs less per unit.
- Carton dimensions. Accurate CBM from your supplier avoids re-measurement charges.
- Season. Space tightens in the Q3–Q4 peak and before Tet, for shared containers too.

LCL Rules and Paperwork
- ISF still applies. Importer Security Filing data is due at least 24 hours before your cargo is loaded on the vessel in Vietnam (CBP: Importer Security Filing (10+2)).
- Wood pallets must meet ISPM 15 treatment and marking (USDA APHIS: ISPM 15 wood packaging).
- Labels and marks. Mark every carton with consignee and carton count so it can be sorted at both warehouses.
Duty guidance here is general. Look up your products in the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule and confirm each HTS code with a licensed customs broker.

- Certificate of origin: when your product or buyer needs one
Common LCL Pitfalls
- Carton sizes on the packing list that don’t match the real cartons.
- Weak cartons: LCL freight is handled more than a sealed full container.
- Forgetting destination CFS and delivery fees when comparing quotes.
- Shipping LCL every week when one combined container a month would cost less.
LCL Shipping Questions
When is LCL cheaper than FCL?
For a few pallets or a small order. Once your cargo fills about half a container, a full container is often cheaper per unit, so we quote both when it’s close.
How long does LCL take from Vietnam to LA?
The warehouse steps at each end add time compared with a full container. Transit times vary by carrier, season and port congestion. Ask for your current schedule with a quote.
Can I combine orders from several suppliers?
Yes. Cargo from nearby suppliers can be delivered to the same consolidation warehouse and shipped together.
How much does LCL cost per cubic meter?
Rates change weekly, so we don’t publish them. Get today’s rate with your CBM and weight.
